She is based on the Vaquita Porpoise, a nearly-extinct species. They are the most-endangered cetacean on the planet, and will likely be extinct by the end of 2019. It is a bit of work to find recent articles about them, but here are two of them: March 2019 | January 2019

We can all help the Vaquita and other species that face extinction, even just by raising awareness of their plight and of our effect on the Earth.

She is very shy and sweet-natured, but will not hesitate to capsize or otherwise stall a poacher's vessel. She tears down gill nets that she comes across, aiding the efforts of the humans that she watches do the same.

She is small, but strong.

If she leaves the water, which is extremely rare, she walks only on the longest toe of each of her webbed feet.

She swims with Vaquita porpoises and tries to guide them away from locations where nets might be illegally set up.

Her "voice" is high, melodic, and sweet
